If you sleep more than 8 hours it may increase the risk of the disorders of cerebral circulation.
When the sleep time is more than 8 hours every night, the risk of a stroke, acute disorders of blood flow in the brain was 46% higher than with an average duration of 6-8 hours. What is interesting is that people, who first suffered from sleep deprivation (slept less than 6 hours) but now sleep more that 8 hours, have more chances to have a stroke.
These observations were true even irrespective of the standard risk factors for stroke: high cholesterol levels in the blood, high blood pressure, obesity and lack of physical activity. Scientists came to this conclusion based on the survey in which 9692 people took part, whose average age was 62 years. All participants were being observed for 9.5 years. During this time, 346 of them had a stroke.
“We do not know yet whether long sleep is the reason, a consequence or an indicator of poor health – says one of the authors of the research published in “Neurology” journal. Further work is needed to clarify the relationship between long duration of sleep and a stroke”.
